Returns a specified number of characters from the start (left side) of a text string.
Compatibility: All Excel versions
Syntax
=LEFT(text, [num_chars])
Example
=LEFT(A1,3)
When to Use It
Use LEFT to pull a fixed-length prefix out of a text value — e.g. the first 3 characters of a product code.
